12/9/07  Path/ology: Don’t Let Your Therapist Drive You Crazy!
For TGI people seeking, experiencing, or undergoing transition and their supportive loved ones

Are you sick of dealing with provider insensitivity, office receptionists using incorrect pronouns, long service delays,
and/or your therapist’s failure to listen to and meet your needs? Have you been denied or delayed from medical
transition due to agency or provider discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or having a non-binary or non-
stereotypical gender expression? Been burned by self-described “gender specialists” or “gender experts” who had
no clue about your gender(s)? Did you know that most people who call themselves "gender therapists" have not
been through any accredited, board-certified training or certification program, and that many professionals
consider this term unethical and misleading? Want to find an ethical therapist who respects your gender(s) and
body concept ("hardwiring")? Do you know how to screen prospective therapists when preparing for gender
transition and which interview questions are crucial to ask at your consultation?

Are you aware that the Harry Benjamin (now called WPATH) Standards of Care are not law and that this standard
has been widely critiqued by medical experts for creating health inequities for youth, low income people,
immigrants, people of color and the uninsured? Are you aware that multiple other Standards of Care are used by
respected medical and mental health agencies and providers worldwide? Has your therapist discussed all of your
available options? Did you know that failure to provide you with choices violates the ethical principle of client
autonomy? Unable to find a therapist willing to help you transition who meets your cultural, linguistic, or disability
access needs? Do you know how to respond effectively to therapy abuse and mistreatment? This workshop will
provide participants with the knowledge, tools, and practical skills to be informed, empowered consumers of mental
health services who know their rights and the ethical and legal responsibilities of the client/therapist relationship.

Experienced patient advocate Gavi Ansara and licensed therapist Dr. Marie Sauro will provide you with safe, sane
and consensual (SSC) options for mental health care and help you to identify the path toward transition that works
best for you!

Suggested donation: $15.00.  No one turned away for lack of funds.
Sunday 3-5 p.m.
Class led by: Gavi Ansara & Licensed Clinical Psychologist Dr. Marie Sauro, Ph.D.
